Which gum?

If you can’t brush, chewing gum helps wash away food debris and neutralise an acidic mouth. But not all gums are the same.

Gums sweetened with sugar are a risk for tooth decay while gums sweetened with Xylitol fight tooth decay.

Minty sugar-free gums are fine but lemon, lime or fruit-flavoured sugar-free gums have citric acid which can dissolve tooth enamel over time.
